Stopper of Certificate of Occupancy

Most new apartment or commercial buildings constructed in Los Angeles and Orange County (and many other municipalities) are required to provide radio coverage for first responders such as fire fighters so in the event of an emergency, first responders have sufficient and reliable radio coverage (reference Section 510 of the California Fire Codes). These requirements have caused confusion and surprise to builders and developers as most are unaware of the enforcement of these fire codes.

In most cases, a new building must pass inspection of in-building radio coverage tests by local fire officials such as City of Los Angeles Fire Department (“LAFD”) before a “Certificate of Occupancy” will be issued. As a result, projects can be delayed and last-minute retrofitting of a first responder’s radio coverage system is also costly. These Public Safety Communication Booster Systems are relatively new requirements and much of the industry has been navigating a steep learning curve.
